The Salsa Cutthroat might be hard to categorize. Touring bike? Hardtail mountain bike? Burly cyclocross bike? It makes you wonder if its the only bike you need...

The 2,745 mile Tour Divide event was the birthplace of the Cutthroat Apex 1. 25% of the competitors at the 2019 Tour Divide event used Salsa Cutthroats, making them the most popular bike by far. Reliability, performance and versatility are all needed to get the rider to the end of such an epic ride, and the Cutthroat delivers. Above all, the frame and fork must be very light so as to not work against a rider traveling off-pavement.  The sophisitcated carbon fiber "recipe" that Salsa uses in the frame and fork is enhanced with the construction process. By using interior molds when building the frame's main triangle, every Cutthroat frame is made substantially stronger while keeping weight low. Class 5 Vibration Reduction System (or VRS) construction refers to the Cutthroat's seat stay design that flexes slightly to soak up fatiguing vibration. Mounts for bags, water bottles (up to 5!) and racks are found throughout the Cutthroat's frameset, making the bike perfect for adventurous bikepackers. A tapered head tube adds torsional rigidity for improved handling in rough conditions, especially when loaded down. Thru-axles add another layer of torsional strength adding to power delivery and handling precision. External cable routing makes for easy roadside repairs, while internal wire routing for a front hub dynamo (sold separately) helps keep that accessory functioning in messy conditions. Room for 29x2.4" mountain bike tires brings a wide range of options for road or off-road rubber. The overall fit of the Cutthroat is upright and stable, keeping the rider comfortable during extended tours and multi-day events.

An 11-speed SRAM Apex 1 single-ring drivetrain shows Salsa's awareness of the rough conditions that every bikepacker and gravel racer might encounter. By eliminating the front derailleur, the Cutthroat is lightened and made mechanically simpler. The Cutthroat can still have a front derailleur installed aftermarket with an adapter (sold separately) installed in the frame's hardpoint on the seat tube. An SRAM Apex 1 shifter operates a long-cage SRAM Apex rear derailleur, delivering precise shifts with excellent durability. An aluminum SRAM GX 1000 crankset is equipped with a 38T X-Sync chainring for power delivery. Out back, An 11-42T cassette adds a massive gearing range for challenging terrain. WTB's tubeless-ready alloy STP wheels are wrapped with treaded Maxxis Ikon 29x2.2" tires, boasting plenty of grip in technical singletrack. Cable-operated Hayes CX Expert disc brakes deliver reliable stopping power in all conditions, rain or shine. An alloy Salsa Guide stem and 24-degree flared Salsa Cowchipper drop handlebars are matched with an alloy Promax seatpost and WTB Volt Sport saddle.
